Good morning and happy Friday! Memorial Day Weekend is here. As we head into the long weekend, we're taking a moment to remember the service members who gave their lives. Cheers to them 🇺🇸

In this week's issue:

  • New IPA ingredient just dropped: hot dog buns?!

  • D&D(&B) for all our fellow nerdy craft beer fans out there

  • The research has spoken: beer is good for you

Our faves from this week

  • 👻 It's spooky season all year round at Voodoo Cellar in Boise. On Tuesday's we watch horror (and search for the secret hidden skeleton).

  • 📚 TBT to elementary school book fairs. 1852 Brew Co. in Visalia is bringing them back, but with beer. Our millennial hearts are bursting with nostalgia.

  • 🌭 Elicit Brewing's newest experiment that no one asked for, but has us intrigued: a hot dog bun IPA in collaboration with Super Duper Weenie.

  • 🐉 Calling all D&D(&B) fans! A rad St. Louis couple hosts a D&D (&beer) lovers dream featuring table tops full of cold pints and D20s.

  • 🐈‍⬛ Our new favorite beer mascot: ERNIE the 22-year-old brewery cat at Mobotown Brewing in Baltimore has stolen our hearts.

A trip to your local pub a day keeps the doctor away

Turns out, drinking is good for you?!

This week we stumbled upon a fun article from the University of Oxford that talks about the benefits of social drinking. Call it confirmation bias, but we fully buy in because we've experienced this firsthand!

The article references a 2016 study examining the functional benefits of modest alcohol consumption. What did it find? "People who have a 'local' [pub] that they visit regularly tend to feel more socially engaged and contented, and are more likely to trust other members of their community." That sure is music to our ears.

Essentially, those who drink at their favorite brewery feel more connected to their communities as a whole versus those who don't. We have experienced this in every place we've lived, from Oregon to CA, all the way over to the East Coast.

When we've had a local brewery to call 'home,' we have such strong memories of the place and the people we met along the way.

There is so much research out there to support the importance of having human connection, both for our short-term and long-term health. As if you needed another reason to visit your local pub or brewery, don't worry – we got you ;)

So, the next time you need to feel closer to your community: take a trip to your local brewery! Who knows, you may just meet a new friend, fall in love with the bartender, or find a new favorite barrel-aged stout. You can thank us later.
