The pursuit of the perfect pairing
Since the dawn of the ages, we’ve all been familiar with pairing wine with food. A nice cabernet with a medium-rare steak, a pinot noir with fresh caught salmon… you get the idea. But something that hasn’t been in the mainstream is pairing beer with food. Often beer lovers are content with the classic food truck staple at the brewery.
One man believes strongly that there is a place in this world where beer and food belong together, and we couldn’t agree more with him. Garrett Oliver, brewmaster at the Brooklyn Brewery and his team have hosted numerous beer and food pairings that the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) has even developed a formal brewing program in honor of these events.
Oliver’s time in England ignited his craft beer making– not necessarily out of passion, more out of necessity. He recognized that if you can attract the clientele who appreciate sipping a nice pint, those are the kind of people who will appreciate, and deserve, a good meal pairing with their pint.
Speaking of good beer pairings… former ‘Simpsons’ show runner Bill Oakley teamed up with Vector Brewing in Dallas TX to bring a seven course meal titled “American Culinary Curiosity Dinner” which featured rare regional bites from across the country. So rare in fact that the menu is a secret. Think America didn’t have culture? Think again. Not only were the rare regional meals featured, but Vector created a seven drink pairing to go along with the meal. There was comedy, stories about food and culture, and cold pints to go around. Apparently Bill hosts these events across the country, you can find out more here.
If you’re reading this and thinking about what to pair with your next New England Hazy, or summer Kolsch we highly recommend checking out Garrett Oliver’s classic The Brewmaster’s Table which is a 2003 classic that was ahead of his time on beer and food pairings.
Cheers to good beer, good food, and the weekend y’all.
